Poor Memory & Attention Late in Life: Is It ADHD or Dementia?

June 16 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm MDT
Free

EXPERT: David W. Goodman, M.D., LFAPA

When older adults report memory lapses, attention problems, and other cognitive difficulties to their doctors, ADHD is rarely the first diagnosis considered. Yet undiagnosed ADHD in older adults is more common than most providers realize.

What might be really going on? Could cognitive struggles indicate undiagnosed ADHD, a neurodevelopmental disorder? Or might they signal early signs of dementia, a neurodegenerative condition? How do you differentiate between the signs of ADHD and dementia when both conditions share overlapping symptoms involving dopamine dysfunction and chronic inflammation?

According to research, adults with ADHD are up to three times more likely to develop dementia than their peers without ADHD. Common co-occurring conditions in adults, including depression, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes, can increase dementia risk.

Co-existing psychiatric disorders in the presence of medical illnesses need to be diagnostically prioritized to develop an effective treatment sequence that is safe and effective.

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • About the diagnostic considerations for cognitive symptoms including poor memory and focus
  • What differentiates dementia from ADHD in older adults
  • About concurrent medical and psychiatric disorders that contribute to cognitive complaints
  • About treatment options for ADHD that consider safety, drug interactions, and target symptoms in older populations

There will be an opportunity to post questions for the presenter during the live webinar.
