Easily Accessing Mental Health Services in Calgary
As COVID-19 continues to impact children, youth and families in a variety of ways, we are seeing an increased need for supports, particularly for those in the community who may be accessing mental health and addiction services for the first time.
Hull Services recently received funding for a pilot project through the City of Calgary as part of the 2021 Change Can’t Wait Community Action on Mental Health and Addictions. We have this used funding to create a free Mental Health and Addiction Navigator service available to families in Calgary to help address this increased need for supports.

I am a registered psychologist at Hull Services (a not-for-profit organization) working as the Mental Health and Addiction Navigator helping children, youth and families better identify and access mental health and addiction services in our community.
When I work with families, I will first determine the presenting concerns of the young person and their family during an initial assessment. Upon completion, I will provide my insights as well as offer suggestions and contact information as to the types of resources and community supports that are available and the family could benefit from. After families have had a chance to connect with the community resources and supports, I will follow-up with them to ensure that the supports identified were accessed, and if they were found not to meet their needs, then additional support suggestions would be provided.
Our hope is the Mental Health and Addiction Navigator role will help meet some of the increased need for support through a young person and family-centered, solution-focused, and community-supported way.
