YouTube, Teachers Pay Teachers, and Instagram are filled with “cutesy” reading strategy videos, posters, worksheets, etc. designed and posted by well-intentioned professionals. We’ll dissect some of these resources to determine whether or not they are aligned with the science of reading and determine if they have the green light to use with all learners, if they can be redeemed with some tweaks, or whether they need to be abandoned completely. We all have some skeletons in our reading strategy instructional closet – let’s begin the new school year fresh by Marie Kondo’ing those that do not serve our students and by building a repertoire of direct and systematic instructional practices that will allow our students to access text effectively and efficiently, thereby sparking the true joy of reading.
