CHADD Webinar: Do I have to Talk to My Parents? ADHD, Adulting, and Conversations that Help, Not Hurt

June 24, 2021 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm UTC+0

Host: CHADD. Presenter: Rick Silver, MD

Parents play an important role for teens as they transition to independent adulthood. Sometimes the conversations are not easy or comfortable—especially when teens have ADHD or another brain-based condition. This webinar aims to provide emerging adults with the basic skills to have necessary talks with their parents that are as supportive and productive as possible. Participants will learn how to have an active role in conversations that help make “growing up” a smoother process.

Following this webinar, participants will be able to:
*Explain to their parents how their ADHD affects their emotions, thoughts and actions, and how these may be different from what is expected of them.
*Ask their parents for specific kinds of help, including emotional support and resources for improving executive functioning.
*Request that family members have calmer, mutually respectful conversations that lead to good problem solving about life challenges.
*Set boundaries with their parents, so they have the right amount of freedom to experiment with life and learn from their own mistakes.
*Manage  distress as they navigate through development into a competent young adult.
(held 4 pm Mountain Time, 6 Pm ET)
